Building the Future:
Watertown High School Robotics Team
2023-2024 School Year Grant: $2,000
At the Watertown Community Foundation (WCF), we believe education has the power to transform lives and create opportunities for all. That’s why we are proud of our support for STEM initiatives across the Watertown Public School district, including programs like the Watertown High School Robotics Team which are making it possible for students of all backgrounds to become the next generation of engineers, scientists, and leaders.
Started in 2008, the Watertown High School Robotics Team, called the KwarQs, teaches engineering and computer science to interested students in the Watertown community. In 2024 the KwarQs, a 15-member team of sophomores, juniors and a senior, was especially motivated to build a competitive robot and keep improving the software. They logged over 2,000 student-hours of hands-on STEM education in fields like computer science, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing. Their outreach efforts, including demonstrations at Watertown’s Faire on the Square and the Cambridge Science Festival, engaged over 500 community members. These events both showcased the students' technical skills and inspired curiosity and excitement for STEM in the broader community.
With the support of a $2,000 School Program Grant from the Watertown Community Foundation, the KwarQs purchased essential materials, like batteries, motor controllers, a 3D printer filament, and other supplies to build The Conductor, their competitive robot. This grant also made it possible for each KwarQ team member to wear a student-designed team shirt to proudly represent their school and community.
Their hard work paid off. While competing against 36 other teams from across New England in the FIRST Robotics Greater Boston Regional Competition, the KwarQs and The Conductor won their first ever gold medal.
The Robotics Team serves as a safe, welcoming space for all students, including LGBTQIA+ youth and those from diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. The grant funds enabled the team to expand its outreach, including events like their off-season pride-focused gathering in June 2024. Furthermore, by maintaining a no-cost membership and offering translation resources for Portuguese and Spanish-speaking families, the team ensures that everyone can participate without financial or language barriers.
One freshman described their first robotics competition as “the best day I’ve had in a very long time.” Moments like these, highlight how the KwarQs build confidence, foster friendships, and ignite a passion for science and technology.
The Watertown Community Foundation is honored to have supported the Watertown High School Robotics Team and look forward to seeing the continued impact of their work in the community. Together, we’re building the future—one robot at a time.
